Most guests who check into the TRHM Rest House are here for a reason: a volunteer placement, a research stay, or work with one of our partner health facilities. Few realise that the roof over their head is itself part of the mission.
A guesthouse with a purpose
The Rest House was created to solve a very practical problem. Mwanza welcomes a steady stream of volunteers, researchers, and visiting health professionals, and every one of them needs a safe, affordable place to stay. Rather than let that spending flow out of the community, TRHM built its own accommodation — and priced every shilling of its profit back into the organisation's programmes.
The model is simple and transparent: guests pay a fair rate for a clean room, and 100% of the proceeds support community health work. There is no third party, no commission, and no ambiguity about where the money goes.
What your stay funds
Revenue from the Rest House flows directly into TRHM's core programmes:
- First aid and first response training for community members
- Street medicine outreach for street-connected communities
- Health education workshops in schools and villages
- Equipment and supplies for partner clinics and responders
- Hosting international volunteers whose skills stay in the region
Because the guesthouse covers these core costs, donations to TRHM can go further — funding expansion rather than just keeping the lights on.

More than a bed
The Rest House offers single rooms, doubles, and dormitory-style accommodation, all with the essentials: clean linen, fans, secure storage, Wi-Fi, and a shared kitchen and lounge. It is a short walk or ride from the city centre, the port, and our partner facilities on the lakeshore.
Guests also become part of the community. Many arrive as strangers and leave as friends — meeting other volunteers over breakfast, trading stories in the garden, and learning the rhythms of Mwanza life.
