Welcome to Tanzania Rural Health Movement (TRHM).

Every day, communities across the Lake Victoria region face health emergencies — road traffic injuries, drowning incidents, maternal complications, and acute medical conditions — where the nearest health facility may be hours away by road or boat. We believe that effective emergency care begins long before a patient reaches a hospital. It begins with a trained neighbour, a prepared community, and a coordinated network of responders who know exactly what to do when every second counts.

Since our founding, TRHM has grown from a small community initiative into a registered NGO delivering practical, community-based solutions across service, research, and environmental sustainability. Through our street medicine programme we bring essential healthcare directly to street-connected children and elderly people. Through the Mwanza Community First Response Project we train families, schools, transport workers, and health partners in first aid and emergency response. Through our research collaborations we study the health challenges facing underserved populations, and through the TRHM Rest House we host volunteers and researchers advancing our mission.

None of this would be possible without our partners — the Global Prehospital Consortium, WHO, and UNICEF — nor without the community responders who are the heart of this movement. When a boda driver stops to help at the scene of an accident, when a teacher stabilises a child before help arrives, that is the difference between tragedy and survival.
